So just what goes into getting you a good flatbed freight quote? There are many factors that transportation companies look at to get you your freight quote. Some of which are the following:

Total Mileage – Most rates are calculated on a rate per mile basis
Pick up and Destination points - there are different rates for different points of delivery or pick up. For example, 600 miles from TN to OH will cost a little over $1.00 per mile however 600 miles from TN to FL will be closer to the $1.50/$2.00 per mile mark.
Tarping – Whether it is 4’, 6’, or 8’tarp there will be an additional charge if these are needed. The bigger the tarp the higher the amount charged.
Blocking/bracing – Equipment such as coils require special bracing to ensure the load does not move or shift during transit and special bracing can affect the rate you are given.
Over-dimensional – If your load is larger than 8ft wide, 45,000 lbs or 8ft high, in most states, there will be additional charges for permits and the rate per mile will typically go up. It would benefit you (if you move these types of lanes often) to call the DOT for your state and get these costs. Many trucking companies will over charge for these services.

The best tip for saving money on your flatbed loads would be to get multiple quotes for your freight, or use a company like 150freight. The next best way to “keep them honest” is to make them break out exactly what they are charging for. Whether it is tarping, blocking/bracing, or permits, have them itemize their quote.
